PpcSoft iKnow features
Security
You should not store any passwords in PpcSoft iKnow by default !
Your data is stored in plain text in order to be accessible from any platform using any text editor and is therefore very easily accessible.
PpcSoft iKnow will automatically create backups of your data and store them in your %TEMP% folder, so if you enter any passwords they will be stored in plain text there as well !
Get state of the art security
However, you can get state of the art protection of your data if you
- use a strongly encrypted volume/disk (using TrueCrypt or similar tools)
- store and run PpcSoft iKnow in portable mode to store both your data file, temporary files and automatic backups on the encrypted volume.
TrueCrypt is a free open-source disk encryption software that is very secure, and because it is open-source the code can be verified by anyone (if you're worried about the quality of the encryption or any backdoors etc).
Your data wil be strongly protected if you do this. TrueCrypt uses AES, and AES is the first publicly accessible and open cipher approved by the NSA for top secret information.
In addition, if you synchronize the encrypted volume/disk to a separate computer/offline storage, your data will both be protected and secure in case of a hard-drive failure/fire/theft etc (and you don't have to worry about the security of your 3rd party provider or the security of the storage in the cloud, as the TrueCrypt protection is very strong).
For instructions on using TrueCrypt and Dropbox for secure synchronization, see this Dropbox Wiki article.
