PpcSoft iKnow features
Run PpcSoft iKnow directly from a portable device
PpcSoft iKnow has been designed to be able to run directly from a portable device, like a USB stick.
PpcSoft iKnow will automatically detect if it is started from a portable device, and will then save all the data and settings locally (in the same folder as it is started from).
All you need to do is copy the iknow.exe from the 'Program files' directory to a portable device, and it will run independently on any machine that allows running applications from a portable device.
When you run PpcSoft iKnow in portable mode, no data will be saved on the local computer - everything will be saved on the portable device (including settings and temporary files).
This functionality can be very useful for people on the run - but be careful that you don't lose or forget your portable device anywhere !
Advanced: "Simulate" USB
You can also 'force' PpcSoft iKnow to run in portable mode by starting it with command '/usb' - e.g. 'iknow.exe /usb' from the Run dialog in Windows or the command prompt.
The best (and easiest) method is usually to create a shortcut to the 'iknow.exe' and add '/usb' to the end of the file path in the shortcut settings.
This can be useful if you want to run PpcSoft iKnow inside a TrueCrypt container (which is not automatically detected as a 'portable' device) for maximum security (all settings, temp files and backup files will be stored locally with your iKnow data file).
In this example, 'iknow.exe' has been renamed 'PpcSoft.exe' and copied to a secure volume W:
The exe file is stored in a subfolder 'iKnow', and the data file, settings, temp files and backup files will all be stored in a subfolder under 'W:\iKnow' in this case.
Also note that because 'iknow.exe' has been renamed 'PpcSoft.exe', the icon is automatically changed to a red color (instead of the default orange) so that you can run both iknow.exe and ppcsoft.exe at the same time, and easily see which is which (if you want to have your personal and work data separately, for instance).
