From vision to reality: 66 years after 'As we may think', the 'memex' vision from 1945 has finally been realized

In July 1945, Vannevar Bush described the first hypothetical hypertext system, the memex, in the article 'As We May Think'. This concept influenced the early hypertext systems, eventually leading to the creation of the World Wide Web we have today.

Bush envisioned "an enlarged intimate supplement to one's memory", a device in which you would store all of your books, records, and communications. Instead of traditional indexing (with large amounts of information, folder hierarchies, tags and mind maps won't scale), he envisioned a storage system analogous to the human brain using associations, where any item may be connected to another.

If a colleague shares a note with you, the note will be converted to link to your notes (while your colleague may have other automatic links in the same note). However, hyperlinks to web pages, files and images will be preserved when you share a note.

All your knowledge is stored locally on your computer, not in the cloud. You have 100% control of your knowledge, and it is always accessible.

If you want to take some notes with you using a mobile device, iKnow integrates with Dropbox to easily synchronize selected notes. The notes can be viewed and edited on any device (iPad/iPhone/Android/Blackberry etc) as they are stored in a simple text format.

Use the powerful editor to create new notes, or copy and paste information directly from other documents and web pages. You can also paste lots of images into each note, or simply link to them if they are stored elsewhere.

You may even capture articles directly from the web, automatially grabbing both the article text and a snapshot of the web page itself. The captured web page will be stored as a normal note, and the content of the article will be linked automatically to your other notes as well.
